Planet of Slums documentary

I’m putting together a multi-authored series of documentary shorts about the rapid growth of urban poverty. I am looking for video advocacy groups with whom I can partner up for this in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Russia.

Trailer: Planet of Slums documentary from Lotje Sodderland on Vimeo.
This series of multi-authored documentary shorts marks a watershed moment in human history when for the first time, more than half the world’s population is living in cities.

From state-sponsored arson in Manila to child exorcism in Kinshasa, we thread together eight made-for-broadband video segments that zoom in on the everyday struggles faced by millions stranded in the urban wasteland between underdevelopment and globalisation.

Mushrooming migration and booming birth rates are adding a million people a week to the world’s urban population.

This explosive and unchecked growth means that by 2030, potentially half of the world’s population will reside in city slums, as the Haves retreat to fenced-off communities while the Have-nots make do with whatever space is available in the teeming urban jungles of the global South.

Footage shot by slum- and pavement-dwellers working closely with video advocacy groups. is peppered with archive footage and motion design, and pulled together uner a strong visual brand.

Put together, the 8 segments form a complete 70-minute film, as a voiceover by celebrated urban theorist Mike Davis talks us through an urban population discarded in vast, marginal slums and excluded from the formal world economy.
